Fed: GPs to get extra help with elderly patients

Family doctors will get extra help caring for their elderly patients with a new kit
launched today.

Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE says with Australia's ageing population, general
practitioners increasingly need support when treating patients with health problems across
different areas.

Dr WOOLDRIDGE says the kit will further arm GPs with knowledge and tools to treat their
older patients and those with chronic conditions.

The kit contains an at-a-glance ready reference guide on new Medicare items, a continence
help line flier and information brochures for allied health professionals and consumers
about the new Medicare items.

It will be distributed to all GPs, medical and health professional associations, state
and territory health departments, rural health organisations, aged care organisations
and major health non-government organisations.
