ALBANY -- Hillary Rodham Clinton has named a top aide to state Comptroller H. Carl McCall as her deputy campaign manager in her U.S. Senate race, officials said Monday.

Barry Sample, who like McCall is black, is a veteran of former Gov. Mario Cuomo's administration and also has strong ties to New York's law enforcement community.

Sample was a deputy state budget director and a deputy criminal justice director under Democrat Cuomo. McCall hired him late last year to become the $123,000-a-year director of intergovernmental and community relations for the comptroller's office.
